Seventeen wimpels (Torah binders) for a Torah scroll. Germany, France, Johannesburg, 1799-1917. Linen; felt-tip pens and gouache paints; colorful ribbons. Ten wimpels are from the 19th century. All are colored, except for one which is embroidered. The quality of painting and of the letters varies; most wimpels are folk-art, home-made. Drawings of animals were added to some as well as visual depictions of the Torah, chuppah, bride and groom. On some wimpels a name of a newborn appears in Latin characters. Average width: three meters. Overall condition – fair. Holes and stains to many of the wimpels.
