Carnet de Chֳ©ques [Checkbook], par Caran d'Ache. Paris, [1892 or 1893]. French.
Book of caricatures by Caran d'Ache (pseudonym of Emmanuel Poirֳ©, 1858-1909), French artist and painter of political and anti-Semitic caricatures, a pioneer of the art of comics and caricature.
The caricatures in this book relate to the "Panama Affair", the most significant economic corruption case in the Third French Republic in the year 1892 (the French government was bribed to keep as a secret the economic hardships of the Panama Canal Society).
Most of the figures in the booklet that are seen holding money bills or bribe have distinct anti-Semitic characteristics (obese, long noses or in disguise). The book's leaves were designed to look like bank checks. [24] leaves, 27.5 X 12.5 cm. Good condition. Several stains. Original cover, damaged and loose
