Carmel Original winery was established in Haifa in 1889, by Shimon Friedman, a native of Tiberias. In 1912, Friedman purchased a winery, which operated in the Moshava Petah Tikva, in the Lachman mansion – the first stone house built in the Moshava – which became a branch of the Haifa winery. The winery operated there, under the Friedman family's management, until 1964, when it was sold to Tnuva. In 1971, it was sold to the Stock liqueur company, and was renamed HaMartef ("The Cellar"). In 1990, the winery was resold, and named Barkan Wine Cellars.
