Anfang, Ursprung und Herkommen des Thurniers inn Teutscher Nation [Beginning, Origin and Tradition of the Tournament in the German Nation], by Georg Rüxner. [(Germany): Hieronimi Rodlers, Simmern, 1532]. German. Second edition.
A composition about the origins of tournaments in Germany during the first half of the second millennium (ca. 1000-1500). Contains a detailed description of 36 tournaments, where they were held and a list of those who took part in them.
The composition is accompanied by hundreds of in-text woodcuts; some of them depict the various tournaments and competitions, the prize-awarding ceremonies, the balls and celebrations that took place during the tournaments, and others depict the heraldic coats of arms that decorated the armors and shields of various aristocratic dynasties (many of them colored by hand).
The title page and colophon leaf are missing. The title page text of the first edition (1530) was copied by hand onto the front endpaper.
II-CCXIII, [3] leaves + [2] plates, 30.5 cm. Good overall condition. Stains. Old paper mounting to the margins of several leaves. Old handwritten notations. Wormholes to the margins of several leaves. Half-parchment binding, with tears and blemishes. ?From the estate of Prof. Shlomo Simonsohn.
