Amulet to Protect the Newborn at Circumcision – Algeria

Opening: $200
Unsold
Amulet to protect the newborn at circumcision. [Probably Algeria: Rabbi Abraham Boukabza, early 20th century].
Lithograph.
This amulet belongs to a set of three amulets that were hung on the wall above a "Chair of Elijah" (a special chair designated for circumcision ceremonies), at the time of a child's circumcision. Illustrations of a set table, a Chair of Elijah, and a circumcisionist (?), in addition to two fish, a menorah, and the names of four archangels – Auriel, Raphael, Gabriel, and Michael – all appear as if enclosed within a triple-arched gateway. This gateway is framed by the words of one of the "Songs of Ascent" from the Biblical Book of Psalms (128), inscribed inside the axes of a vegetal border.
Rabbi Abraham Boukabza was a bookseller in Algiers.
Approx. 22X18 cm. Fair-poor condition. Numerous tears, including some open tears. Wear and stains. Partially mounted on old pieces of paper.
