Autograph album containing autographs and dedications by singers, composers, authors, actors and intellectuals. Vienna, ca. 1906-1952 (most of the autographs are from the 1920s-30s). The original owner was a Viennese Jewish woman who immigrated to Israel before the war.
The album contains 59 autographs and handwritten dedications. About half are signed directly in the album; and the rest on pieces of paper, cards, envelopes and postcards, which were pasted or tipped-in to the album. Many of the autographs include a few words or lines of text. A few have musical notations and one an ink-wash drawing. Most were dated by the signers.
Almost all the signers are Austrian personalities. Many are Jews, some of whom were persecuted by the Nazis. Among others, the album contains autographs and dedications by the following renowned personalities:
• Max Brod - Jewish author, publicist, composer and close friend of Franz Kafka - Signed, handwritten 13-line letter in German, March 1952.
• Albert Heine - Actor, director of the Vienna Burgtheater.
• Erich Kästner - Author ("Emil and the Detectives" and more) and poet - Autographed postcard.
• Jan Kiepura - Jewish-Polish actor and tenor.
• Josef Popper-Lynkeus - Jewish scholar, scientist and author who influenced Einstein, Freud, Buber, Zweig and Jabotinsky - Several lines handwritten on a postcard.
• Arthur Schnitzler - Jewish-Austrian author and playwright- Signed, handwritten 7-line letter in German, 1925.
• Erich-Paul Stekel - Jewish composer (son of Wilhelm Stekel).
•Many others.
Fifty-nine autographs in an album. 16x13cm. Overall good condition. Some stains, creases and minor damages. One leaf partly detached.
