Megillat Esther written on parchment with colored illustrations based on the midrashic exegesis that interprets the Megillah as an allegory to the city of Jerusalem.
Illustrated by an orthodox Jew who avoided painting images of people and revealed expertise with regard to the midrashim and the mitzvot connected to Purim.
The Megillah is kosher, “Beit Yosef” handwriting, probably Jerusalem writing of 1920s.
The illustrations which appear in the margins present scenes from Jerusalem, Rachel’s Tomb, illustrations of animals and plants. There is also an illustration of the Western Wall with its square open, and no Mugrabi buildings, attesting to the fact that the illustrations were painted after June 1967, apparently immediately following the Six Day War signified by a strong feeling of messianism and redemption. At the end of the Megillah there are illustrations of various symbols connected to Purim: Haman hanging, mishloach manot, table set for the Purim feast, Megillah and a charity box.
[12] columns, 30.5x220 cm. Good condition. Stains and some damage to the text, including a repaired hole.
