Decoration for a Holy ark. [USA?], Late 19th or early 20th century. Wood, wood paint. A board in the shape of Tablets of the Law. Above them appears a stylized decoration in the shape of branches, painted burgundy and gold, inscribed “Keter Torah” (Torah crown). The first words of each commandment, in gold, is carved in particularly fine letters. Above each column – appears a carved, golden Star of David. The Tablets are painted in dark green. Maximum length: 78.5 cm, width: 49 cm. Good condition. Crack below the first column.

Decorative plaque for a synagogue. [Israel? 1950s?]. Hammered copper sheet; paint. Decorative plaque made of hammered copper, painted white and red, with an arch, lions and the Tablets of the Law. Star of David appears in the upper corners. The Tablets of the Law, painted white, appear in the center with the letters א-י in two columns and are supported by two lions, standing on a capital of a pillar; the manes and tips of tales of the lions are hammered in dense dots. A white dot in the eye. Length: 59 cm, width: 101 cm. Good condition. Some bends at margins. Some corrosion to reverse.

Elaborate micrograph, written and illustrated by hand, in honor of Farha di Solomon David Sassoon and her son, David [Solomon] Sassoon. [England?, late 19th or early 20th century]. Illustrations of Stars of David, circles, a square frame and a large arch in an impressive micrograph, in colors of blue, red, green and gold. Texts – verses of protection and blessings, prayer and thanksgiving: Psalms verses and biblical verses, names of the angels Michael and Gabriel, Priestly Benediction, and more. A dedication inscription within the frame: “Hashkifa MiMe’on Kodshecha…”. The micrograph offered here was created in honor of Farha (Flora) Sassoon following the passing of her husband in 1894 and in honor of her son, the famous collector David Solomon Sassoon (1880-1942). A large, colorful, “Mizrah”, created by Shaul Ben Pinchas Hornstein. Lithographic printing by Em. Joachim, Vienna, 1889. Depictions of sites in Jerusalem are based on the prototype drawn by R’ Yehossef Schwartz in 1837. Rabbi Shaul Hornstein – author of “Givat Shaul” (Vienna 1883), a book about the geography and history of Eretz Israel settlements and holy sites from biblical times to modern times. The ”Mizrah” offered here portrays graphic depictions of various sites, graves and towns in Eretz Israel: At the top - tombs of Davidic Kings and the tomb of Rabbi Meir Ba’al HaNess; in the center, a large image of the Western Wall and houses of Jerusalem below which appear sites on the Mediterranean seashore (“Yam HaGadol”): “Zo Ir HaKodesh Yaffo”, [the tomb of] “Elisha the Prophet [on] Mount Carmel”, “Ir HaKodesh Haifa” and “Zo Ir HaKodesh Zidon”; Along the right margins appear images of the tomb of Yossef HaTzadik, Cave of the Patriarchs, Rachel’s Tomb, tomb of Shamai HaZaken and the tombs of the Rambam and Hashla; along the left margins we see the tomb of Rabbi Yochanan HaSandlar, tomb of Hoshe’a the Prophet, tomb of Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai, tomb of Shmuel the Prophet and the site of “Tiberias Hot Springs”. 61X48 cm. Shiviti, large leaf, printed lithograph with three drawings of a menorah, the Brich Sheme prayer, and more. Signed at the bottom (Hebrew): “by Moshe ben Yitzchak Mizrahi, resident of the holy city of Jerusalem” and dated - 1926. The artist, Moshe son of Yitzchak Mizrahi (Shah), was born before 1870 in Tehran, immigrated to Eretz Israel in 1890 and changed his name to Mizrahi. He settled in Jerusalem and opened a workshop for frames and mirrors in the spice market of the Old City. He died in the 1930s. Mizrachi was known for the “Mizrach” and “Shiviti” pictures he created.
