The shoreline stretches between Beirut and Gaza. Three medallions with illustrations of biblical scenes in the upper right corner. A detailed illustration depicting the story of Jonah the prophet at lower left.

In 1556, the Dutch cartographer and astronomer Peter Laicstain visited Palestine and made a detailed draft of the map of Palestine, which he gave to cartographer Christian Sgrooten, who published the map in 1570. In 1584, Ortelius copied the map, changing the orientation from north to east, which resulted in the present map. The book "Itinerarium Sacrae Scripturae", by the German priest, theologian and cartographer Heinrich Bünting (1645-1606) was first published in 1581 and was the most complete and comprehensive work on Biblical geography to date. Since then, it was repeatedly reprinted and translated into many languages.

The title cartouche is flanked by Moses with the Tablets of the Law and Aaron in priestly attire.
The map is attributed to cartographer Jodocus Hondius II, who presumably created the engraved plate and sold it to Willem Janszoon Blaeu.

Chorographia Terrae Sanctae in Angustiorem Formam Redacta, map of Palestine. Hand-colored engraving, from Commentarius in Sacram Scripturam, by Jacobi Tirini [Jacobus Tirinus]. [Augsburg, 1711].
Engraved map of Palestine after Christian van Adrichom, signed in the plate: "Jos. Erasm. Belling, Cathol. Sculps. Aug. Vindel" [Josef Erasmus Belling and August Vindel].
The map is east-oriented and depicts Palestine on both sides of the Jordan River, with the territories of the Tribes. The shoreline stretches from Sidon in the north to the Nile Delta. Broken lines depict the route of the Israelites in the desert.
With an inset oval map of a bird's eye view of Jerusalem, "Hierosolymae veteris imago", presumably made by Cornelius Galle, after a map of Jerusalem by Juan Bautista Villalpando. Border with illustrations of ancient coins, a plan of the interior of the Temple and a view of its front, vessels of the Temple and more.
Engraved map: approx. 82X32 cm. Frame: approx. 108X58 cm. Good condition. Unexamined out of frame.
This map was reprinted in several editions which differ, among other things, in their font. The first edition was printed in Antwerp, 1632 (see Laor 771).

Elaborate title cartouche with vegetal border, flanked by Moses and Aaron. A medallion at base of the cartouche depicts the brass serpent. An additional cartouche at lower right depicts Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden under the snake, wounded around the tree of knowledge.
The engraving was made by Louis Cordier (signed in the plate, in the lower left corner), after Guillaume Sanson.
