The Light of Youth, [1937], a painting by Maurice Sochachewsky (1918-1969).
Oil on canvas. Signed.
The painting depicts Jack Johnson, a young miner from the city of Talywain in Wales.
Maurice Sochachewsky (1918-1969), born in East London, England, studied at St. Martin's School of Art. In ca. 1937, he lived for eight months in the mining town of Talywain in Wales, documenting the miners' lives and hard lot. During World War II, he served in the Royal Welch Fusiliers and was wounded during the Battle of Normandy. In 1949, shortly after the establishment of the State of Israel, Sochachewsky visited Israel, sketching its views. He illustrated several Yiddish publications published in Britain in the 1940s. Several of his works are exhibited in the Ben Uri Gallery.
Approx. 83X48 cm. Fair-poor condition. Blemishes to paint. Tears in the center of the canvas. An open tear. The canvas is torn along the frame and is detached from its margins; part of the margins are missing. Framed.

22 karat gold medal designed by Marc Chagall. Struck by Argor, Switzerland. Israel, 1979.
Obverse: a work by Marc Chagall, made especially for this medal as a donation to the "Korat Gag" enterprise initiated by Prime Minister Menachem Begin's office and designed to assist young couples to buy an apartment. Seen on the right is Moses, with the Tablets of the Law in his hands, behind a five-branched Menorah. To the left is Jerusalem with overhanging flowering branch. Legend: "For a light of the nations" (Isaiah 42, 6). Signed "Marc Chagall" in Hebrew and English and dated 1978.
Reverse: verse from Isaiah (from which the medal's title was taken): "I the LORD have called thee in righteousness, and will hold thine hand, and will keep thee, and give thee for a covenant of the people, for a light of the nations", in Hebrew and English. This side dated 5739 and 1979. Legend indicating place of issue, Jerusalem, in Hebrew and English. Additional legend: "Peace" in Hebrew, Arabic and English.
The medal is placed in an acrylic glass case originally enclosed with it.
Diameter: 60 mm. Good condition.

A bibliophile edition, printed on thick paper and hand-bound. Copy no. 11 of 50.
Gerson Leiber (1912-2018) was a Jewish American painter, sculptor and lithographer. His works were exhibited in more than 200 exhibitions and in a variety of museums and galleries in the USA and worldwide.

Fine lithographic cover illustration, by artist and illustrator Mikhail Isaakovich Solomonov (Михаил Исаакович Соломонов, 1872/3-1942).
The Odessa Committee of Chovevei Zion was founded in Odessa in 1890, working for the Jewish settlement of Palestine. In 1906, Menachem Ussishkin was appointed chairman of the committee (in the present programme, Ussishkin is referred to as event coordinator).

Anthology of Hebrew poetry - biblical poems, prayers and Piyyutim, medieval Spanish-Jewish poetry, early modern and modern Hebrew poetry up until the poetry of Bialik and Tchernichovsky, including the poems HaTikvah and Mishmar HaYarden by Naftali Herz Imber.
The title page is followed by a leaf with a printed dedication: "For the fourth Zionist Congress in London" – the congress, which was the largest yet, took place in London in August 1900.
The book is bound in an original pink printed cover, with an illustration and the inscription "Dedicated in honor of the fourth Zionist congress in London" (Hebrew) and in an original binding of the "Tushiya" publishing house, with an embossed inscription on the front cover: "Book of the Century of Hebrew Bibliotheca" (Hebrew).
VI, 118 pp. 18.5 cm. Good condition. Stains and minor blemishes. Owner's stamp inside. New endpapers.

Two bookplates bearing portraits of Theodor Herzl:
1. Bookplate of Saul S. Spiro with Herzl's portrait in the center, framed by a Star of David and encircled by the David Wolffsohn Building on Mt. Scopus, the Tower of David, and other illustrations. Spiro was an educator, author, and journalist, a Zionist activist, and secretary and director of the Executive of the Zionist Organization in the United States.
9.5X6.5 cm. Good condition. Minor traces of adhesive tape on back.
2. Bookplate of Leon Kellner bearing a portrait of Kellner himself (?) alongside portraits of William Shakespeare, Benjamin Disraeli, and Theodor Herzl. Kellner was a close friend of Herzl's, a lexicographer, an expert English-language grammarian, a scholar of Shakespearean literature, and a pioneering member of the Zionist movement.
13X12 cm. Good condition. Tear and minor creases.

Small metal label, printed, featuring a portrait of Theodor Herzl with the Tower of David in the background, issued by the Jewish National Fund (JNF) in the United States. [New York, early decades of the 20th century].
Produced by Union Label, Amalgamated Lithographers of America.
Label bearing the celebrated depiction of Theodor Herzl addressing the unseen crowd from the balcony in Basel, Switzerland. In the background is the image of the Tower of David, with the Jewish immigrants in their biblical return from the Babylonian Exile underneath it (a portrayal such as this had appeared as early as the late 19th century, and was also featured on JNF stamps dated 1909.) The English caption "Jewish National Fund" appears above the portrait, and the Hebrew "Keren Kayemet Le'Israel" beneath it. The manufacturer's details are printed at the tip of the protruding tab.
1.5X2.5 cm (not including tab). Very good condition.
