Twenty-five photographs of the early days of Tel Aviv. Ca. early-mid 1920s.
Among the photographs: the first City Hall of Tel Aviv ("the Committee House"); two photographs of "The Exhibition and Fair for the Promotion of Goods Made in Israel" (which later evolved into the Levant Fair, 1924); a football game between HaKoah Wien and Maccabee Tel Aviv in the old Maccabee neighborhood; the first electrical transformer on Allenby St.; the Herzliah Gymnasium; three photographs depicting Lord Balfour's visit to Tel Aviv (showing a gate decorated with the British flag before the Galei Aviv casino, a mounted guard at the entrance to the casino and Lord Balfour arriving in an official car); and more.
One photograph is captioned in the plate and marked with the stamp of the photographer, Z. Brill.
The present photographs were presumably taken from a private album of the Tel Avivian architect Shmuel (Sam) Barkai, who can be seen strolling the streets of Tel Aviv in some of them (three of the photographs are stamped on verso with the stamp of Sam Barkai).
6X4.5 to 9X14 cm. Condition varies. Good overall condition. Traces of gluing. Several photographs with postcard divided back; some are captioned by hand (Hebrew and English). Several photographs trimmed unevenly.

Fifteen photographs of architecture in Palestine, some of them documenting early Bauhaus-style buildings. Jerusalem, Haifa, Tel Aviv and elsewhere.
The photographs include: an inner room at the Government House in Jerusalem (designed by Austen St. Barbe Harrison, completed in 1933); the Carmel Sanatorium in Haifa (designed by Richard Kauffmann, completed in 1935); a garage and parking lot of the "HaMekasher" Company in Jerusalem (designed by Richard Kauffman, completed in 1939); four photographs of Bauhaus-style private residences; three photographs of architectural plans for the promenade of Tel Aviv; and more.
Five of the photographs are stamped on verso with photographers' stamps – Rudi Weissenstein, Yitzhak Kalter, Walter Christaller and V. Levenheim (two photographs); two are stamped on verso with stamps of the architects – Richard Kauffman and Shmuel (Sam) Barkai.

Large, varied collection of photographs, mostly from private albums, documenting Palestine in the decades before the establishment of the state: studio photographs of individuals or couples, photographs of tourists visiting Palestine, numerous photographs documenting group trips throughout the country, historical sites, the establishment of settlements ("Tower and Stockade" and more) and building works in existing villages and towns, streets and figures in cities in Palestine, and further themes. Numerous photographs stamped with photographers' stamps (a variety of photographers and studios in Palestine) and captioned, captions describing the photographed sites. Several photographs are from the 1950s to 1970s.
Size varies, ca. 4X3 cm. to 14X9 cm. Mostly postcard-sized. Condition varies.
