Hallelujah, 24 lithographs by Ben Shahn. New-York: Kennedy Graphics, 1971. English, French and Hebrew.
Shahn finished his work on "Hallelujah", illustrations for Psalm 150, shortly before he passed away, and it constitutes his last complete work.
Copy number 166 out of an edition of 240 copies (a total of 250 copies were published). The lithographs are accompanied by an introduction by Bernarda Bryson Shahn and a letter to Shahn from Fernand Mourlot in French and English.
The book is contained in a fine cloth-covered case, with the gilt title "Hallelujah, Ben Shahn".
[33] leaves, 42 cm. Very good condition.

The drawing is in bold colors in a naïve style. In the center we see the Tablets of the Law, with the text of the Ten Commandments in Hebrew and in English. Around them appear ten individual illustrations. Each illustration depicts one of the Ten Commandments, and is accompanied by a verse.
Approx. 48.5X70 cm. Matted and framed: 67.5X88.5 cm (without the glass). Good condition. Some creases and blemishes (mostly to margins).

The British artist Richard Clifton-Day was particularly known for his illustrations for the covers of western, adventure, fantasy and science-fiction books. This painting appeared on the cover of the book "The Settlers" by Meyer Levin (second book. Published by Sphere, London, 1975), telling the story of an Israeli family of pioneers in the spirit of an American western.

The booklets were distributed in a synagogue in Vienna and contain songs, stories and short essays about the holidays.

Benjamin Murmelstein (1905-1989) was a community rabbi. He served as the last head of the Judenrat in Theresienstadt Ghetto until its liberation.
