Twenty documents, certificates and paper items which belonged to Noach Swirski, a Jewish Partisan who joined the Red Army. Different places in Europe and Palestine, early 1940s through 1970s. Hebrew, Russian, German, Yiddish and Polish.
Noach Swirski (born in Vidzy, 1922), a partisan and soldier in the Red Army. At the beginning of the war he headed a Jewish underground in Vidzy Ghetto and later escaped and joined the Partisan force "Voroshilov" that was active in the nearby forests. The documents offered here indicate that Swirski enlisted in 1943 to a riflemen unit in the Red Army, was sent to the front, and in 1944 was injured in his left hand and disqualified to serve.
Among the items:
* Two certificates, written by hand on official forms, indicating that Swirski participated in "Voroshilov" Partisan regiment. Issued in 1944. Russian.
* Two certificates, written by hand on official forms of the Red Army. Given to Swirski following his injury: injury certificate and a certificate stating that he is no longer qualified to serve. Given in 1945. Russian.
* Medical certificate on behalf of a Russian military hospital, typewritten on lined paper, with details about his injury, the treatment and his disability. Russian.

8. Two membership booklets in "Fighters against the Nazis Organization, Central Committee", in the name of Swirski. Issued in Tel Aviv in 1957-1972.

1-4. Four postcards of the Red Cross, printed and filled in by hand, sent to German soldiers held prisoners by the Russians. Three were sent to a soldier named Johannes Guttman and one to Edmund Orth, from various cities in Germany. 1946-1947. The postcards vary one from another.

Letter dated July 17, 1945, typewritten on an official Red Cross form, sent to a Jewish soldier serving in the British Shipping Division stationed in Italy, by Red Cross representatives, notifying the soldier of the dismantling of the Theresienstadt concentration camp, in which the soldier's mother was interned. English.

Wallet for documents, made of cardboard and fabric, produced by the group "Kvuzat Amal" in the Ferramonti di Tarsia DP camp. A paper label is glued into the inside bearing a Star of David and the inscription: "Made by Kvuzat 'Amal', Book Binding Section, Ferramonti (Italy), Former Concentration Camp, Founded by Shraga Kohn & Shlomo Weiss".
The outside of the wallet is decorated with a Star of David.
The Ferramonti di Tarsia DP Camp in Italy was the largest of the concentration camps which were established following the orders of Benito Mussolini in the summer of 1940. Most of its inmates were Jewish. In September 1943, a few days before Italy's surrender to the Allied Forces, the Ferramonti detainees were released. Many remained in the camp and it served as a camp for displaced persons until its closure in December 1945.
Open wallet: 14X22 cm. Good condition. Stains, tears and minor damages.

Single leaf, printed on both sides (hand-printed, not professional). Printed on one side are a Star of David between two light-blue stripes and the verse "The redeemed of the L-d shall return, and come with singing unto Zion" (Isiah, 51, 11). Printed on the other side are a Star of David between two light-blue stripes with the inscription "Gift from the Jewish Fighting Force [Jewish Brigade] to the children of Belgium".
Leaf: 19.5X27.5 cm. Good condition. Stains, creases and minor defects.

A "Shanah Tovah" (New Year) card, photographs and a food voucher which apparently, belonged to a Holocaust survivor from the Buchenwald Camp. Various German cities [possibly, some items are from other countries], 1946-1948.
1. "Shanah Tovah" (New Year) card, 1949, with a photo of the sender. Illustration of two ships on their way to Israel under a pair of doves carrying signs in their beaks: "1949". Printed on top and bottom margins: "The year and its curses are finished, a year and its blessings should commence, you should be written for a good year" (Hebew).
2. Food voucher for concentration camp survivors (Bezugsnachweis für Lebensmittelzulagen für ehemalige KZ-Insassen), issued for David Steinman by the
Staatsministerium des Innern Staatskommissariat für rassisch, religiös und politisch Verfolgte.

Catalogue of an exhibition which took place in Budapest in 1946, documenting the Holocaust atrocities. The catalogue includes disturbing photographs as well as pictures of artworks created by various artists, some of them holocaust survivors (such as Shraga Weil and Arthur Szyk). Quotations from Theodor Herzl and Ya'akov Hazan appear on the first page.
The catalogue was edited by Imre (Yitzchak) Herbst (1916-1978). Herbst, born in Slovakia, was active in "HaShomer HaTtza'ir" movement since youth. In 1942, after his brother was arrested for being involved with the communist party, Herbst was forced to escape to Hungary, where he joined the pioneers' underground. In 1944, when Germany invaded Hungary, he was already one of the leading activists. Later on Herbst was part of "HaBricha" organization and involved with Aliya Bet, and in 1949 immigrated to Israel.

Di Farshvundene Velt [The Vanished World], edited by Rafael Abramovitch. New York: Forward Association, 1947. Yiddish and English.
The defining photographic record of the Jewish communities of Eastern Europe lost or decimated during the Holocaust. With over 500 photographs documenting Jewish life in Eastern Europe before WW2, this book was an early post-war depiction of communities that were gone forever, along with their synagogues, streets, stores, and people. The photographs were sourced from the collection of the Joint, YIVO and the photographers Alter Kacyzne and Roman Vishniac.
