Herwarth Walden (1879-1941), a Jewish-German artist, art curator, founder of "Der Sturm" periodical and a publishing house as well as an art gallery. Walden, born as Georg Levin, was married to the Jewish-German poet Else Lasker-Schiller, who gave him his new name. Being a communist, he left Germany in the early 1930s because of the threat on the Nazis and moved to the Soviet Union, where he was persecuted for his connection to Avant Garde art and died in a Soviet prison in 1941.
