Two volumes containing reproductions of photographs taken by Francois Scholten when he visited Jaffa – photographs of views and sites in the city; photographs of the inhabitants, of all ethnic groups and religions; photographs of fruit and plants, animals, and more.
The first volume is titled "La Porte D'Entrée Jaffa" and compiles 499 reproductions of photographs; the second volume is titled "Jaffa La Belle" and compiles 371 reproductions of photographs. A relevant citation from the Bible, the Talmud or the Quran accompanies each photograph.
Both volumes were printed in an edition of 1000 copies (both are numbered. Volume I is numbered 194 and volume II is numbered 178). Bound in elegant bindings, with leather spines.

Black and white press photograph documenting injured passengers of the Theodor Herzl illegal immigration ship. Haifa port, 1947.
The Theodor Herzl ship embarked from Port de Sète (France) on April 2, 1947 with 2600 illegal immigrants. While at sea, the ship was discovered by the British and two destroyers were sent to take over the ship. A violent confrontation developed between the British forces and the immigrants claiming the lives of three passengers and injuring dozens more. Finally, the ship was brought to the Haifa port and its passengers were sent to detention camps in Cyprus.
This photo portrays four injured people lying on stretchers at the port surrounded by groups of soldiers and onlookers.
On the verso of the photo is a note with information for the press (in English), above the ink-stamp "International News Photo". The note also states the name of the photographer - H. Mendelson (presumably the German photographer Hugo Mendelson, 1918-2012).
17X20.5 cm. Good-fair condition. Stains on verso and to margins (not affecting photo). Acidic adhesive tape on verso (at the margins). Minor damages.

1. Album with 16 photographs showing the construction stages of oil tanks in Haifa Port. Photographed by the sisters Charlotte and Gerda Meyer. The photographs are mounted on the album leaves and titled on them (by hand, in English). The album opens with a dedication: "To M. Ben Shachar, in appreciation for assistance and brave cooperation, from Solel Boneh. Haifa, 1.6.42." (Signed by hand and ink-stamped "Solel Boneh Ltd.").
The works of constructing the refineries in Haifa started in 1938 and were completed in 1944. Construction was carried out by the American company "Kellogg" assisted by "Solel Boneh".
