Pair of Torah finials. Egypt, Italian-Jewish community, [early 20th century]. Dedicatory inscription dated 1953.
Silver, cast and engraved; chased.
Torah finials of Italian design, in a style familiar from Trieste, slender and tall in shape. Body surmounted by column of three flattened spheres. Central part of body hexagonal, with all faces decorated in vegetal pattern. Chains with bells at ends suspended from suspension loops at bottom corners of hexagon. Base of body cup-shaped. Tall shafts, tapering upward. Engraved Hebrew dedicatory inscription on both shafts, in memory of "Menahem Rokez son of Simha" and his wife, "Luna Rokez daughter of Miryam." Mark of maker, "Hayyim Cohen Saban" appears on both shafts, along with date in Arabic, 1953, apparently same as date of dedicatory inscription.
Height: 35 cm. Good condition. Loose screw joints.

Hand clenched, with cuffed wrist. Hebrew dedicatory inscription in memory of "Habiba Hassan," year "5700" [1940].
Length: 27.5 cm. Good condition.

Obverse: large Menorah and Hebrew legend reading: "Menorah Club, 5700-5706 [1940-46], Alexandria;" marked. Reverse: English legend, reading "The Menorah Club, Alexandria, 1940-1946."
The soldiers' facility known as the Menorah Club served as a restaurant and place for resting and reading for Jewish soldiers attached to the British army who served in Alexandria, Egypt during WWII. It was located next door to what was known as the Hatikvah Club, established by the World Zionist Organization.
Diameter: 3.5 cm. Suspension loop.

Two Islamic amulets and pumice stone holder. Egypt, 1920s to 1960s.
Silver (marked), cast, sawed, and engraved; sheet silver, repoussé and punched; stones; pumice stone.
1. Pair of pendants / earrings, 1920s and 1930s. Inscribed (Arabic, sawed): "Mashallah," praising the Lord and warding off the Evil Eye (literal translation: "What the Lord has willed"). Approx. 4X2 cm.

2. Amulet pendant, 1930s. Round pendant, with seven suspended chains with stones and bells. On one side of pendant, engraved Star of David encircling inscription (Arabic) "Mashallah" (see above); on other side, passages in praise of the Lord. Approx. 9.5X5.5 cm.
3. Pumice stone holder, 1960s. Black pumice stone, upper part coated with silver sheet with vegetal patterns, punched and repoussé, surmounted by cast ornament in shape of bird with bells. 9.5X6 cm.
