Two Torah pointers. Jerusalem, Yemenite-Jewish Community, [early / mid-20th century].
Silver, cast and engraved.
Two Torah pointers of a basic form generally characteristic of pointers from Libya, Tunisia, and Algeria, and presumably produced in Jerusalem by a craftsman originating from one of the above countries. Flat pointers; their upper segments, surmounted by a suspension ring, are rectangular, gradually widening toward the middles. The lower segments then taper, narrowing toward the wrist. Both bear dedicatory inscriptions. Clenched hand with long, gently flexed index finger and cuffed wrist.
1. With vegetal and geometric patterns and two Stars of David. Hebrew dedicatory inscription: "[…] donated to the Sham'ah Synagogue by Hayyim Mahsoumi […] toward the elevation of the soul of my father Avraham son of Yehudah […]." Length: 26.5 cm.
2. With dense vegetal and geometric patterns. Hebrew dedicatory inscription: "[…] toward the elevation of the soul of […] Ya'akov David Mizrahi son of Miriam, passed away on the 23rd of Tammuz 5715 [July 13, 1955] […]." Length: 29 cm.

1. Long Torah pointer. Upper segment of handle square, with dense vegetal pattern, surmounted by suspension ring. Lower segment cylindrical, terminating in sharp-pointed tip. Hebrew dedicatory inscription in elegant letters: "Farha daughter of Rumah […]." Length: 35.5 cm.
2. Upper segment cylindrical, with several joints, surmounted by suspension ring. Lower segment flat, tapering gently toward slightly rounded tip. Hebrew dedicatory inscription: "[...] for for the repose of […] Mas'udah daughter of Farha […]." Length: 29 cm.
3. [Iraqi Kurdistan? Israel?]. Flat elongated Torah pointer, surmounted by suspension ring. Hebrew dedicatory inscription (misspelled): "Moshav Zekhariah, shall not be sold, shall not be redeemed." Star of David near tip. On reverse side, the Hebrew letters are engraved sequentially from "aleph" to "yod," along with a Star of David and the Hebrew inscription "Sanctified to the Almighty." 1. Large Hanukkah lamp. Triangular back plate. Row of oil fonts is a set of small bowls with scalloped rims. Elevated servant light. Length: 22 cm. Width: 51 cm. Good condition.
2. Small Hanukkah lamp. Triangular back plate. Row of oil fonts is a set of small, cylindrical bowls with scalloped rims. Elevated servant light. Suspension hole. Length: 10 cm. Width: 22.5 cm. Minor fractures.
3. Hanukkah lamp resembling North African Hanukkah lamps in design. Back plate in form of a dome, surmounted by smaller dome. Row of oil fonts with scalloped rims and with pinched, pointed spouts for wicks. Servant light attached to back plate at junction of large dome with small dome. Wide drip pan, resembling drip pans on Moroccan Hanukkah lamps. Suspension loop. Length: 26 cm. Width: 28 cm.

Havdalah spice container in shape of flattened sphere. Two ornaments, also in shape of flattened spheres, one in middle of stem, and the other near upper end. Surmounted by flag-shaped ornament. Domed base. Similar in design to Havdalah spice boxes created in the early 20th century at Bezalel. See: "Preisverzeichnis der Erzeugnisse der Kunstgewerbeschule Bezalel in Jerusalem", Berlin, ca. 1913, item no. 211 (photo on p. 7).
Height: 14 cm. Minor warping.

2. Pendant bearing depiction of the biblical heroine Ruth, gathering sheaves of grain, designed by Ze'ev Raban. Marked: "Bezalel, Jerusalem, 935, Made in Palestine."
3. Carved shell brooch, depicting the biblical Ruth gathering sheaves of grain (possibly created by Moshe Murro), set in a silver filigree frame. Marked: "Bezalel, Jerusalem."

1. Olivewood Kiddush cup, inscribed (Hebrew/English): "Mt. of Olives / Jerusalem."
2-3. Two small spice containers, one made of olivewood, designed to look like a barrel, the other made of walnut and designed to look like a small fruit.
4-7. Four writing accessories (two nib holders). All four inscribed with the word "Jerusalem" (in Hebrew or English), next to illustrations of the Western Wall, the Tomb of Absalom, and Rachel's Tomb.
Size and condition vary. Fracture to lid of barrel-like vessel.

2. Medal marking the opening of the International Colonial Exposition in Paris, 1931. Struck by L. Bazor. Diameter: 3.1 cm.
3. "HeHalutz" ("The Pioneer"), brooch, created by Shmuel Kretchmer (marked), after a design by Erich Goldberg which appeared on the cover of the Second Golden Book of the JNF. Diameter: 2.5 cm.
4. "Herzl," brooch created by Shmuel Kretchmer (marked). The Hebrew inscription "Keren Kayemet LeYisrael" (Jewish National Fund) appears above Herzl's portrait. 2.8X1.7 cm. Clasp missing.

Doll representing an Oriental (native Palestinian) figure riding on a donkey, probably created by Rivka Stark-Avivi. Palestine, [ca. 1920s-1930s].
Diverse materials (cardboard, various types of fabric, leather, and other materials).
Rivka Stark Avivi (1895-1979), native of the Russian Empire. Immigrated to Palestine in 1914 and began studying at the Bezalel School of Arts and Crafts as one of the school's earliest female students. In 1920, joined the Jewish Artists Association as the very first student to work alongside her teachers. Her work consisted mainly of cloth dolls with distinct ethnographic qualities that served to capture and document the way of life of the various ethnic communities of Palestine. She adopted the name "Stark" as a pseudonym.
