Pe'at HaShulchan, laws pertaining to Eretz Israel, by R. Yisrael of Shklow, disciple of the Gaon of Vilna. Safed: R. Yisrael Bak, 1836. First edition.
The author, R. Yisrael of Shklow (1770-1839), close disciple of the Gaon of Vilna (whom he studied under in the latter's final years), was active in publishing the books of the Gaon of Vilna and disseminating his teachings. He led the immigration of the disciples of the Gaon of Vilna to Eretz Israel.
In his lengthy and important preface, the author describes his trials and tribulations upon immigrating to Eretz Israel. He mentions the epidemic which broke out in the Galilee in 1813, the passing of his wife during their escape to Jerusalem, the death of their children with the spread of the epidemic to Jerusalem, and the demise of his parents in the Galilee. He continues to recount his return to the Galilee, his imprisonment during the siege of Akko and his miraculous rescue from the collapse of houses in the winter in Safed, and more.
The rest of his preface serves as a very important source of information on the life of the Gaon of Vilna, as R. Yisrael describes in detail the prominence of the Gaon of Vilna, his approach and methods, his extraordinary knowledge of the Torah and sciences, and more.
[5], 2-109, [1] leaves. 30 cm. Good condition. Stains. Minor damage. Stamps and handwritten inscriptions. Old binding with leather spine. Wear and damage to binding. Bookplate.
One of the last books printed in Safed before the 1837 earthquake, following which both the author and R. Yisrael Bak, the printer, relocated to Jerusalem.
This copy includes the final leaf of errata.

Tractate Shekalim of the Jerusalem Talmud, with the glosses of the Gaon of Vilna, and with the Taklin Chadtin and Mishnat Eliyahu commentaries, by R. Yisrael of Shklow, disciple of the Gaon of Vilna. Minsk, 1812. First edition. Title page printed in red and black.
With approbations by R. Chaim of Volozhin, R. Menachem Mendel of Shklow and R. Aharon HaLevi Segal of Shklow.
The Jerusalem Talmud was printed according to the text of the Gaon of Vilna, with his corrections. Older versions were printed in the margins (in places where they differ from the text of the Gaon of Vilna), together with Masoret HaShas.
The author, R. Yisrael of Shklow, was a disciple of the Gaon of Vilna and leader of the immigration of the disciples of the Gaon of Vilna to Eretz Israel (see item 106). On the title page and in the approbations, the author is referred to as "previously a maggid in Shklow, and presently residing in the Upper Galilee". This book was printed by the author during his trip to Europe to raise funds for the settlement of the disciples of the Gaon of Vilna in Eretz Israel. In his preface, R. Yisrael describes his wanderings and hopes to return to Eretz Israel. This preface also contains much valuable information about the history of the Gaon of Vilna and his disciples. Amongst others, he mentions the foremost disciple of the Gaon of Vilna – R. Chaim of Volozhin, with great reverence and submission.
A foreword by R. Chaim of Volozhin on the composition of the Gaon of Vilna on Order Zera'im is printed before the preface. The author's preface is followed by two responsa – halachic correspondence between R. Chaim of Volozhin and R. Akiva Eger (regarding someone who married a convert, and after her passing married her daughter). Another responsum by R. Chaim of Volozhin was printed at the end of the book.
Ownership inscriptions on the endpaper and title page, of R. "Tzvi Hirsh Telish" and of his son "Leib son of R. Tzvi Hirsh Telish". Stamp in Latin characters, from the town of Tykocin (Tiktin).

Shaarei Tzedek, summary of the laws pertaining to the Land of Israel, by R. Avraham Danzig author of Chayei Adam. Vilna, 1812. First edition.
The book was written out of the Chayei Adam's yearning to immigrate to Eretz Israel (aspiration which was ultimately not realized), and it discusses the laws pertaining to Eretz Israel. In his preface, he relates of a vow he made to immigrate to Eretz Israel: "When the houses in the courtyard I live in fell down, in 1804… I made a great vow that when I merit to marry off my sons and daughters, and it is possible, I will immigrate to the holy city of Jerusalem, and spend the rest of my life there worshipping G-d…". He writes of his hopes to receive an immigration permit, and mentions the disciples of the Gaon of Vilna who immigrated before him: "I thought that perhaps I will merit… and the emperor will grant me a passport, just like several years ago R. Saadya, R. Chaim and R. Hirsh received one…". There are three lamentations at the beginning of the book, one to be recited upon entering Eretz Israel, one when reaching Jerusalem, and one when standing before the Western Wall.
The author, R. Avraham Danzig (1748-1821), was renowned for his famous work Chayei Adam. He served as dayan in Vilna and was the mechutan of the Gaon of Vilna (father-in-law of the granddaughter of the Gaon of Vilna, daughter of R. Yehuda Leib son of the Gaon of Vilna). See Hebrew description.
Ownership inscriptions: "This book Shaarei Tzedek belongs to the rabbi… community leader R. Pesach son of R. Meir, son-in-law of R. David of Brody, currently residing here… signed, Shemarya son of R. Ze'ev Wolf"; "This book belongs to R… Aharon son of R. Mordechai Meir…". Stamp and censor's signature.
