Nefesh HaChaim, by Rabbi Chaim of Volozhin. Vilna and Grodno, 1824. First edition. Introductions by his sons Rabbi Yitzchak of Volozhin and Rabbi Yosef of Chorzów. Approbations by Rabbi Shaul Katznelbogin and Rabbi Avraham Avli Pasvoler of Vilna.
A basic book of the teachings of the Vilna Gaon and of his disciples about the way of conduct and pure service of G-d according to revealed and kabbalistic rites [many parts of the book were written as rejoinders to the Chassidic school of thought according to the ways and philosophy of the Vilna Gaon and of his disciples]. The author, R. Chaim of Volozhin cherished this book more that all his prolific halachic writings, and before his death, he ordered his sons to expedite its publishing. The book was edited and brought to print by his son R. Yitzchak of Volozhin and by his nephew, the kabbalist R. Avraham Simcha of Mstsislaw, who both served as heads of the Volozhin Yeshiva.

P'nei Yehoshua, Apei Zutra - novellae on Tractates Ketubot, Gittin and Kiddushin, by R. Ya'akov Yehoshua Falk, Rabbi of Metz and Lvov. Amsterdam, [1739]. First edition. First book of this author printed in his lifetime.
Ancient signatures and various ownership inscriptions: ownership inscription in Yiddish from 1741 of "Aharon son of Elazar"; ownership inscription that the book "belongs to R. Natan ---"; ownership inscription of "R. Gershon Frankfurt [a venerable figure in Pressburg who signed the rabbinical appointment of the Chatam Sofer in 1807]; "Moshe"; "Moshe Sofer of Frankfurt am Main -" [the handwriting is not similar to the handwriting of the Chatam Sofer but the inscriptions are in an ancient script. Perhaps this copy belonged to the Chatam Sofer and was inscribed by one of his disciples]; in Tractate Gittin page 5/a is a signature of "Gavriel Levi --- Dessau" and on Leaf 36/b is a gloss signed with his initials "G.L.D." [Gavriel Levi Dessau].

Gidulei Teruma, commentary on Sefer Terumot [with the text], by R. Azariah Figo. Venice, [1643]. First edition, printed in the author's lifetime.
Gidulei Terumah is cited extensively by the Shach on Choshen Mishpat and is a basic text of Jewish monetary laws. The author R. Azariah Figo (1579-1647) was a leading Venice Torah scholar. He recounts the reason for composing the book in his introduction: During the time he occupied the position as Rabbi of the city of Pisa, distant from Italian Torah centers, "neither books nor Torah scholars could be found there", therefore he took upon himself to compose a work on the teachings of Sefer HaTerumot, authored by Rabbi Shmuel HaSardi, disciple of the Ramban.
Many short notations in Oriental-Rashi script [from the time of printing?] - references and wording corrections. On the title page is a signature in ancient Ashkenazi script: "Koppel Segal of Furth".

Printed after being proofread by Italian Rabbis, R. Avraham Yedidyah son of R. Shimshon Basilea, Rabbi Refael Hayim Mi-Itailah Ha-Rofe, and Rabbi Aviad Sar Shalom Basilea (brother of the first) who also added comments to the book.
Variant. The Orach Chaim has the rare original title page with imaginary images of Rashi, Rambam, Maharil, Maharik, the Rama, and Rabbi Gur Aryeh. Reputedly, the rabbis of Mantova ordered to destroy the original title page following a dispute surrounding the attempt to create portraits of these great rabbis. The copy presented here has the original title page.
Signatures: "Achim" (Hebrew acronym) on all three title pages - R. Avraham Chai Mussafia (Otzar Harabbanim 1056), a scholar from Turkey and Jerusalem. Son of R. Chaim Yitzchak, Rabbi of Split [who also used to sign with the acronym "Achim" - Amar Chaim Itzchak Mussafia]. His book Tehilla L'David on Tehillim (Livorno 1867) and his novellae were published also in his father's book Chaim V'Chesed (Livorno 1844).
All the parts are bound in one thick volume. [Part 1] Orach Chaim: [3], 2-146 leaves. [Part 2] Yoreh De'ah: [1], 148-288 leaves. [Part 3] Even HaEzer: (lacking title page) 2-88 leaves; [Part 4] Choshen Mishpat: [1], 90-268, [1] leaves. 22.5 cm. Good-fair condition. Dampstains. Ancient leather binding, torn and detached.
