Ten professional aerial photographs by Zoltan Kluger, a gift presented by Shlomo Zalman Schocken to friends on the occasion of his 60th birthday. Jerusalem, September 1938.
Each photograph is mounted on cardboard and titled in German on verso of cardboard. The photographs are contained in their original box. The photographs depict: The Old City of Jerusalem, the Hebrew University, Mount Scopus, Tel-Aviv, Haifa Port, Rishon LeZion, Kfar Yehezkel, Moshav Beit-Yossef, Kfar Nahum [Capernaum] and the Jordan River near Jericho. Included are two leaves, one with a printed greeting from Schocken: "I am glad to send to his honor, even if belatedly, a collection of aerial photographs of Palestine as a small gift for his kind greetings for my 60th birthday", and the other one with a list of photographs (in German). On the dedication page Schocken added a personal greeting written by hand (signed), to the physician Dr. Avraham Ticho.
Approx. 28.5X22.5 cm. Good condition. Some defects, mainly to back of photographs. Ink stamps on the leaf with the list of photographs, and on inner side of the box's cover.

1-4. Four photographs mounted on cardboard, one titled by hand on the cardboard (German). The photographs portray the Turkish aqueduct in Acre, fishermen repairing nets, Jewish cemetery in Worms and a close-up of a tombstone in the cemetery. Approx. 16X23-23X28 cm.
5-16. A dozen Bromoil prints by Meyer, ten signed and 6 titled by hand (German and Hebrew). Portrayed among others are: Haredi farmer in Kfar Hasidim, policeman patrolling during a curfew in Haifa, workers squeezing orange juice in a factory, Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem, portrait of Shlomo Kaplinsky, director of the Technion, and more. Approx. 17X22.5 cm-28X23 cm.
Enclosed: Photograph of Meyer, probably, during an exhibition of his works in Manheim, in 1934. Titled by hand (German) and signed "Wort"[?] on both sides of the cardboard sheet. An invitation to an exhibition of Jewish photographers in Manheim is pasted on the back of the cardboard sheet (invitation is typewritten and stenciled [German]). Approx. 17X12 cm.

The Matson Photo Service, Covering Historical Events in Palestine Since 1898, Full Catalogue of Photos of Bible Lands & Middle East Countries. Published by the Matson Photo Service, Jerusalem, [after 1934]. English.
Nine sets of photographs published by Eric Matson, photographer for the American Colony: Gethsemane (a dozen photographs); the Transjordan (a dozen photographs); Jericho, Jordan and the Dead Sea (a dozen photographs); "Newer Jerusalem" (a dozen photographs); Bethlehem (a dozen photographs, some of them of sites in Jerusalem); Haifa and Mount Carmel (a dozen photographs); Cairo (the city; a dozen photographs); Cairo (the pyramids and the Sphinx; eight photographs); Syria and Lebanon (fifteen photographs).
Each set includes an original envelope with the above title. On the reverse are descriptions of the photographs contained in the envelope. All the photos are stamped with the ink stamp of the Matson Photo Service.
The Matsons were handed the management of the American Colony photo service in 1934, and from that time began to mark their photographs with the above stamp. The photos were sold in a store located in the Fast Hotel until 1946, when the Matson family left Jerusalem and moved to California.
Enclosed is an advertising brochure of the Matson Photo Service detailing all the photo sets and their prices.
Photos: 6.5X9.5 cm. Very good condition. Photo missing from one of the envelopes and an extra photo in another envelope. Original envelopes, 12X9.5 cm, fair-good condition. Creases, stains and wear.

Photograph of Betar member Shlomo Ben-Yosef in court. Photo Brenner, Haifa, 1938.
Ben-Yosef is seen with the two other accused Betar members, Avraham Shein and Shalom Zurabin, during their trial.
The three Betar activists, stood trial after throwing a grenade into a bus as a retaliation attack for murder of Jews during the Great Arab Revolt. The grenade did not explode, however according to British emergency regulations, Ben-Yosef was sentenced to death and executed. Ben-Yosef (1913-1938) was the first of twelve "Olei HaGardom" during the British Mandate.
The photograph is titled in the plate: "Military court in Haifa". Ben-Yosef is marked on the photograph. On the back appears an ink stamp: "Photo Brenner, Haifa".

A large and impressive photo-album, presented as a gift to Yitzchak Melamed when he retired after 25 years from his position as Director of the Public Works Department. [Jerusalem], 1944.
Album includes: * Twenty photographs of senior role holders in the Mandate Government and group photographs of Public Works workers in various cities (Gaza, Nablus, Haifa, Jaffa, etc), engineers, architects and other colleagues. The photographs are titled on the album leaves, in English. Names of the photographed are printed on the tissue guards bound between the album leaves. * Two professional photographs from Jerusalem (Zion Gate) and Acre, by the photographer Joseph Schweig. * Four drawings in color depicting Melamed's work (one in watercolor), accompanied by words of greetings and short poems, in English.
Yitzchak Melamed was born in Odessa in 1900. At the age of 11 he was sent to Palestine to study in Rosh Pina. Later, his mother and brother joined him. He continued his studies in the Herzliya Hebrew Gymnasium. His family was exiled to Egypt during WW I (because of their Russian citizenship) where he studied in a French gymnasium and was granted a French matriculation certificate. Returned with his family in 1919 as a civil servant in the Mandate's government and was promoted to the highest position of a local Jewish civil servant - Director of the Public Works Department and deputy director of the treasury. In 1940 he was awarded with the title of MBE (Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) on behalf of King George VI. Served as the Civil Service Commissioner and councellor to the Civil Service Commissioner. Died in Jerusalem in 1968.
Enclosed are several personal documents of Melamed.

Among the photographs: an illegal immigrant prior to her deportation, detainees in Atlit internment camp, packagers of oranges in "Mikveh Israel", unloading boxes in Tel-Aviv port, Naharayim, installing a water pipe in the Negev, laying pipes in tunnels to dry swamps, brigade soldiers training on the beach, Dizengoff square in Tel-Aviv, and more.

1. An album with 72 photographs of Palestine (mounted on the album leaves), including professional photographs from the "Adloyada" celebrations and the "Maccabiah" events in Tel-Aviv, as well as nice photographs from Jaffa, Jerusalem and its vicinity. Most photographs are titled in German (on the leaves). The album opens with the title "Palastina-Reise 1932, II" (first album is missing). Some photographs taken in Alexandria and Italy also appear in the album (not counted).
Size varies, photographs: approx. 6X8.5 cm to 13X18 cm (some photographs appear twice, in the small format and the large format). Good condition. Tears to tissue guards. Album: 23.5X33.5 cm. Good condition. Tear to front binding and slight defects to margins and corners.
