The illustrations (in German: Bilderbogen), are in the format of comic strip - each one is divided into six rectangles telling a story through pictures (each leaf about a different animal). Below each picture is a rhymed text in German.

Volume with 18 issues of the periodical printed in lithographic printing, which contains lithographs of works by the most important artists of the period. No other issues were printed.
In addition to the issues, the volume contains eight poetry pages (Lieder des Bildermann) which were published in the periodical and ten pages of a supplements (beilage).
Among the artists whose works were published in this periodical – Max Liebermann, Erich Hekel, Käthe Kollwitz, Oscar Kokoshka and others. Among the writers – Elsa Lasker Schuller, Max Brod, Stefan Zweig and Erich Mühsam.

Kriegszeit ("Wartime"), an entire set of the journal published in Berlin during World War I. The journal was edited by two Jews - Paul Cassirer, an editor, publisher and gallery owner who was an important figure in the dissemination of modern art in the early twentieth century, and Alfred Gold, a Viennese writer, historian and art critic. Kriegszeit was published as a weekly until issue no. 50, and thereafter twice a month until its publication was ceased.
Printed entirely in lithographic printing, 4 pages per issue, and including works dealing exclusively with war. The journal includes some 200 lithographs in all.
Artists whose lithographs were published include Ernst Barlach, Max Beckmann, Rudolf Grossman, Käthe Kollwitz, Max Liebermann, Hans Meid and Max Slevogt. Issue no. 6 is devoted entirely to the works of Max Liebermann.
Issues 1-40 are bound together. Issues 41-65 are held in a portfolio as separate issues. 48 cm. Good condition.

Hugo Gellert (1892-1985), Hungarian-American artist, of Jewish origin; member of the American communist party. His political views were an inseparable part of his life and art. Gellert's anti-war illustrations were published in various communist and socialistic booklets and periodicals; Gellert also published his works in the “New-Yorker” and in the “New-York Times”. Gellert dedicated the illustrations for “The Capital” to his brother, Ernst, who died in a military prison in New-Jersey in 1918, where he was imprisoned for refusing to be inducted into the army, claiming to be a conscientious objector.
