* Sefer Be'urim, on Rashi commentsry on the Torah, by Rabbi Natan Shapira from Horodna. Contains several illustrations: map of land of Israel, ladder of Ya’akov, Menorah of the Temple and more. [Handwritten gloss in Italian writing].
This is a forged book. At the height of the printing of the original book Imrei Shefer in Krakow [between years 1590-1597], this commentary, whose author is unknown, was printed in the name of Rabbi Natan Shapiro, as related by his son in the introduction of the book Imrei Shefer. This resulted in the banning of the book by rabbis of Poland [see attached material].
All three books bound together in ancient elegant leather binding. Unidentified signature from 1698. First two title pages contain signatures “Chaim Hirsch son of Rabbi Meir Berlin”. The Ga’on Rabbi No’ach Chaim Tzvi Berlin (1734-1802), Dayan in Fürth and Av Beit Din of Metz and Hamburg; well-known as giant of his generation. In a response, Rabbi Chaim of Volozhin wrote to him: “His opinion is as valuable to me as the opinion of one of the Rishonim” (Chut HaMeshulash, clause 9). His significant and well-known books are: Ma’ayan HaChochma, Atzei Almogim and Atzei Arazim. [Composed additional book, Atzei Besamim, on Even Ha’Ezer which was not published, see Kedem catalogue, auction 6, item 399].

The author, among scholars of Eretz Israel and Kabbalists of Safed, disciple and relative of the Ari who is mentioned in Sefer HaChizyonot [book of visions] by Rabbi Chaim Vital. Departed from Safed and emigrated to Venice in 1601, where he printed his book and was associated with scholars of the Yeshiva of the city until his demise. The book contains sermons which he delivered on various occasions and eulogies on Torah giants of his generation, including Rabbi Eliezer Azikri author of Sefer Charedim. In the book he presents sayings in the name of the Ari.

Hebrew [with vowels] and Latin, page for page. Apparently, the book had been translated by David ben Klonimus who wrote the last section of the book, Section of Ta'amei Mikrah, and brought the book to print.
On the reverse side of the title page is a poem in Latin in honor of Daniel Bomberg, followed by an introduction in Latin by Daniel Bomberg. The author as well, praises Bomberg in his introduction.
Simultaneously, an edition in Hebrew only (from 1523) was printed. The order of the letters of the body of the work is almost identical. In this edition, each row is numbered.
Handsome copy in very good condition. [314] leaves. 21 cm. Wide margins, stains, handwritten inscription. Ancient binding, without clasps.
