"Arba'ah Kossot"/"Koss Hamishi". Two illustrations by Pinchas Shuldenrein. Water color on paper, signed P. Shuldenrein. [New-York, between 1948 and 1950]. Two remarkable and detailed paintings by the artist Pinchas Shuldenrein for the Passover Haggadah edited by Rabbi Menachem Mendel Kasher in New-York, 1950, under the title "Haggadat Pesach Eretzisraelit" (Published by "Torah Shelema Committee" in the USA, printed by Shulsinger Brothers).
1. The title "Haggadat Pesach Eretzisraelit" appears on the upper part of the painting "Arba'ah Kossot" (the original paintings were drawn with no titles which have been added during printing). Four golden glasses are portrayed. On each glass are three figures representing, together, the twelve Tribes of Israel. Names of the people who are related to the historic sufferings of the people of Israel are mentioned: Egypt, Babylon, Greece and Persia. Under the glasses appear the words "VeHotzeti, VeHitzalti, VeLakachti, VeGa'alti". The four glasses are tied together with Tefillin straps with Jewish symbols surrounding them (the four species, a Talit, etc.). The Holy Ark appears in the center. 55X37 cm. Good condition.
2. The painting "Koss Hamishi" features a large golden glass, in its center the emblem of the State of Israel encircled by figures of Jews from the Diaspora. On the base of the glass appear the name "Edom" and the word "VeHeveti". Citations from the Torah portion "Lech Lecha" are drawn in the background surrounded by the Map of Israel, its gates open for Olim arriving by ships and airplanes. 55X37 cm. Good condition. Moisture-marks.
The artist Pinchas Shuldenrein was born in Poland and studied in the Warsaw Art Academy. After the holocaust he opened an art studio in the Zeilsheim Displaced Persons Camp with the assistance of the Joint. In this studio Shuldenrein created his famous piece "Yizkor" (see next item). Shuldenrein gave art classes to children in the Displaced Persons Camps and created works inspired by the holocaust. In 1947 he moved to the USA, settled in New-York and a couple of years later changed his name to Paul Sharon. He worked in New-York as an independent graphic designer and worked for the Shulsinger brothers till his death in 1998. (See additional information in the attached material).
