Hanging Shabbat Lamp – Friesland, Holland

Hanging Shabbat lamp. [Friesland district, Holland, 19th century]. Cast brass. Consists of four parts: large crown encompassing the central rod, decorated with lilies and buttons; central part with six removable ornaments shaped as branches with flowers turning upwards and six reflectors shaped as flowers turning downwards. Concave base with cut borders; oil reservoir with six long beams; hanging drip-bowl. Wired. Light sockets at tip of beams. The origin of this elaborate lamp is in Friesland, North Holland, on the border with Germany. In the middle of the 19th century about 2000 Jews lived in the area. Length: 69 cm., max. width: 42 cm.
