Portfolio of Ten Aerial Photographs of Palestine by Zoltan Kluger – Zalman Schocken's Gift to Friends on his 60th Birthday – 1938
Portfolio containing ten aerial photographs of various locations in Palestine, taken by the photographer Zoltan Kluger. The portfolio was commissioned by Zalman Schocken and was presented by him as a gift to friends and well-wishers on the occasion of his 60th birthday. Jerusalem, September 1938.
Each photograph is mounted on cardboard with a label on the reverse in German describing the view seen in the image. The photographs, contained in their original cloth-covered box, show the following views: The Old City in Jerusalem, Mount Scopus, the Hebrew University, Tel-Aviv, Haifa Port, Rishon LeZion, Kfar Yehezkel, Moshav Beit-Yossef, Kfar Nahum and the Jordan River near Jericho. Included in the portfolio are two pages, one with a printed greeting from Schocken stating (in German), "I am happy to send you, even if belatedly, a collection of aerial photographs of Eretz Israel in appreciation of your kind greetings on the occasion of my 60th birthday," and the other with a list of the photographs. In this copy, Schocken added a personal handwritten greeting to the dedication leaf, signed by hand.
