Small Pitcher with Stars of David, and Statuette – Jewish Earthenware Art – Ethiopia
Small three-handled pitcher, and statuette. Ethiopia, [20th century].
Clay.
1. Small pitcher with long, narrow spout and rounded body, tapering downward. Upper half of body with three projecting, rounded handles, interspersed with large Stars of David. Additional Star of David on bottom of vessel. Height: 18 cm. Good condition. Number of fractures.
2. Statuette of pregnant woman carrying baby on her back. Statuettes of this type were crafted by women of the Beta Israel community, beginning in the early 1960s, to be sold to tourists as souvenirs. See: The Jews of Ethiopia, a People in Transition, p. 62. Height: 11 cm. A number of fractures.
