Announcement Concerning Baptising Jewish Children – Bohemia and Moravia, 1768

Venerabilis Nobis Dilecte. Announcement by Maria Theresa, archduchess of Austria and queen of Bohemia and Hungary.
Maria Theresa forbids unequivocally to kidnapping and baptizing Jewish children. Those who break this rule will be fined or be imprisoned for two years. In four exceptional cases baptizing Jewish children is permitted: in case the child's life is in danger; if the child was abandoned by both his parents; if one of the parents converted into Christianity or if the child is of more than seven years of age and wishes to convert.
A baptized child should be raised in a Christian environment, to ensure that he gets a Christian education. In a case of a compulsory baptism, the initiator should raise the child, and if he is unable to do so, the child will be brought up in a Christian hospital or orphanage, or by adoptive Christian parents.
This announcement was published following petitions by Bohemian and Moravian Jews concerning kidnapping and baptising children, in spite of the fact that Maria Theresa was hostile towards the Jewish communities and burdened them with heavy taxes and rules.

Yossef Perl of Tarnopol – Manuscript – Parody on Breslev Chassidim

Manuscript by Yossef Perl of Tarnopol (1773-1839) one of the leading scholars and writers of Galicia, and an outstanding opponent to the Chassidic movement in the 19th century. Written between autumn of 1816 and July 1818.
The manuscript includes "amulet – secret code" and "an encrypted Maggen David", being part of a parody by Perl on Chassidut Breslev (printed with slight changes from a different manuscript).
In "The secret code" Perl is mocking at a passage said by Rabbi Menachem Mendel of Vitebsk about the Ba'al-Shem-Tov; in the Encrypted Maggen David" the names of Rabbi Yisrael Ben Eliezer (the Ba'al-Shem-Tov) and Rabbi Moshe Teitelbaum famous for his amulets, are implied. Perl expressed in this way his mockery at their use of amulets bearing their names, and emphasized that Chassidut is in fact magic and witchcraft.
On the back of the leaf is a draft of a letter in German in Hebrew letters, probably from one of Perl's group in Tarnopol.
25 X 19.5 cm. Good condition. Folding marks.
Manuscript was checked by the researcher Yonatan Meir, see attached page.

Announcement by Emperor Leopold I Concerning Recruitment of Soldiers and trade – Linz, 1684

Wir Leopold von Gottes Gnaden / Erwoehlter Romischer Kayser. [Linz, 1684].
Announcement by the Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, Leopold I, concerning the prohibition to recruit foreign soldiers in the territories of the Holy Roman Empire, and the export of weapons (horses, ammunition, and other products). It is emphasized in this announcement that Jews in particular should avoid any foreign trade.
This announcement was published during the war between Emperor Leopold I and the Turkish Sultan, who took advantage of the tension in Hungary at that time, to attach Austria. The Sultan sent large military forces to Austria in the beginning of 1683, who besieged Vienna and almost conquered it.
The Jews of Vienna were concentrated at that time in Leopolstadt (on the other side of the Danube) and would enter Vienna for trade purposes, even though they were not allowed to reside there. The war against the Turks demanded a significant capital, and a few Jews supplied the army with equipment, amongst them Samuel Oppenheimer, a Jew of Heidelberg, who had a permit to settle in Vienna at a later stage. Other Jews got permits to live in Vienna as family members of workers of Oppenheimer, like Samson Wertheimer, Shimon Michael of Pressburg and others. German.

The Status of Polish Jews – Matheus Butrymowicz – Warsaw, 1789

Sposób Uformowania Zydów Polskich w Pozytecznych Krajowi Obywatelow. Matheus Butrymowicz. Warsaw, 1789. First Edition.
In this booklet, published by the Polish politician Butrymowicz, which he even sent to the polish king, the writer suggests a plan to turn the Polish Jews into more useful citizens. He claims that the Polish law relates to the Jews as a foreign element, burdens them with exceptional taxes, does not grant them rights as to the rest of the citizens, and as a result society's attitude towards the Jews is negative and one cannot expect them to be useful to the state. When, in 1790, a committee was established in Poland to reform the status of the Jews, Butrymowicz was one of its active members.

Collection of Letters from Austria and the U.S.A. to a Newcomer to Eretz Yisrael, 1938-1939

Collection of letters (about 200), sent to Norbert ("Nuri") Nachum Miler, 1938-1939.
1. Letters sent to Miler by his parents and two sisters, after he came as an Oleh to Eretz Yisrael. It seems from the letters that Miler spent time in "Hachsharah" (training) and probably lived in Jerusalem. It is possible that he was a kibbutz member, the name of which is not mentioned. From the contents of the letters it is understood that the family was an observant family. The letters reflect the longing to leave Austria, emigrate to Eretz Yisrael or join relatives in the U.S.A. It is also mentioned that the father was arrested in a concentration camp in Austria but was released after a few weeks.
2. Letters sent to Miler by family relatives, who immigrated from Austria to the United States in 1938. The letters tell that they are trying to achieve documents for Miler's parents who live in Vienna. Most letters are in German, a few in English, two in Hebrew.
