Lot Number 181

“HaTzfira” – Warsaw, 1862 / Berlin, 1874

HaTzfira, "periodical transmitting news…matters of state, science, world news and nature", edited by Haim Zelig Slonimsky. Warsaw, 1862; Berlin, 1874. Volumes of first and second year issues.
• First year, Warsaw, 1862; issues 1-25 (issue 14 is incomplete; lacking in the end).
• Second year (Title: "First year"), Berlin, 1874; issues 1-25.
"HaTzfira" - first Hebrew paper in Poland during the Russian regime and one of the most important papers printed in east Europe. It was founded in Warsaw in 1862, but the period's events - the Polish revolt in 1863 and the fact that the editor Slonimsky became a supervisor of a seminary for rabbis in Zhitomir - resulted in the discontinuation of the paper after six months and twenty five issues only. Slonimsky resumed the appearance of HaTzfira in 1874 in Berlin, and one year later the editorial returned to Warsaw and stayed there throughout its existence. Two volumes, ca.30 cm. Condition varies. Stains, creases and tears. Some restorations. Ex-library copies.
