Shnoder Book – record book for synagogue pledges. [Italy, ca. 19th century].
Italian square script. Thick, high-quality paper, with hundreds of holes on each leaf (most leaves contain some 744 holes), for marking the pledges made by the community members on Shabbat and festivals, when writing is prohibited.
A different name was presumably written at the top of each leaf, yet the leaves were trimmed, and only one leaf (p. 21a) features (most of) a name: "R. Yisrael [?] Chaim Formiggini".
Names of synagogue honors are handwritten at the beginning of each line (each leaf contains different honors, presumably according to the habits of the specific community member).
Inscriptions in Italian on the final page (with some Hebrew) – accounts for "Isaaco Modena" and "Samuel Formiggini".
[81] leaves. 34.5 cm. Good-fair condition. Stains and wear. Tears and repairs. Old binding, with new spine and endpapers.
