Letter from Rebbetzin Nechama Dina Schneersohn, wife of Rebbe Rayatz of Lubavitch. Brooklyn NY, 12th Adar II 1951. Yiddish.
Typewritten on the official stationery of the Rebbetzin, with her signature "Nechama Dina Schneersohn". Addressed to R. Alexander Sender Yudasin (rabbi of the Chabad community in Jaffa for close to fifty years, and prominent Chabad rabbi in Eretz Israel).
The letter was written two months after the appointment of her younger son-in-law R. Menachem Mendel Schneersohn as rebbe (on 10th Shevat 1951). In her letter, Rebbetzin Nechama Dina backs her eldest son-in-law R. Shemaryahu Gurary (the Rashag, husband of her eldest daughter Rebbetzin Chanah Gurary) and demands that he be given central positions of leadership in the movement, asserting that this was the will of her late husband Rebbe Rayatz.
Further in the letter, she expresses the anguish caused to her by people brazenly acting against her husband's will, who tried to oust R. Gurary from these leadership positions – "I can no longer tolerate the bloodshed being caused to me, to my eldest daughter and to my son-in-law". She demands that R. Yudasin arrange a paper signed by Chabad Chassidim, appointing R. Gurary as president of the Tomchei Temimim yeshivot in America, Europe and Eretz Israel, as well as of Agudas Chabad and of Kfar Chabad in Eretz Israel.
