Lengthy letter (49 lines) handwritten by Rebbe Yosef Yitzchak Schneersohn – Rebbe Rayatz of Lubavitch, with his signature. Leningrad (St. Petersburg), Wednesday 10th Cheshvan 1925.
Two pages handwritten by Rebbe Rayatz, with his full signature – "Yosef Yitzchak Schneersohn".
Letter of acknowledgment and blessings from the Rayatz, addressed to the members of the Joint, following their decision to assist in the establishment of religious institutions in various Jewish settlements in Soviet Russia, and to support Jewish artisans and small enterprisers (in the framework of the NEP system – New Economic Policy, instated in Russia in the 1920s, allowing handicraft and small private enterprises, many Jews opened small workshops in their homes to support themselves without Shabbat desecration). The decision of the Joint to support Russian Jewry was reached following a general meeting, at which a letter from the Rayatz was read out. In his letter, the Rayatz had portrayed the terrible material and spiritual plight of Russian Jewry, describing the severe lack of synagogues, mikvaot, teachers and rabbis, and the financial difficulties faced by Shabbat-observant Jews.
In the present letter, the Rayatz expresses his delight at the Joint's decision to support and assist Russian Jewry, and voices his hopes that this decision will indeed be carried out.
The letter was published in Igrot Kodesh of the Rayatz.
